Landslides at Himachal Pradesh, 10 Dead and 60 Missing

The latest on the Himachal Pradesh Kinnaur’s landslides:  as per the Kinnaur deputy commissioner, the Indian Army, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and local administration teams have been called in to assist with the search and rescue operations.

On Wednesday, after a large landslide on National Highway 5 at Nigulsari in the Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh, so far 10 people dead after some passenger vehicles including a Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) bus with at least 28 passengers aboard, were seriously damaged by stones and debris.

PM Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke with Himachal Pradesh’s Chief Minister Jairam Thakur, assuring him that the Centre would assist him in every way possible.

Around 12:45 Hrs, a landslide near Nigulsari village happened. It’s possible that the bus tumbled many feet down the valley and into the Sutlej river. According to officials, the bus was travelling from Reckong Peo in Kinnaur to Haridwar in Uttarakhand.

“One wrecked car was found, but no one was spotted inside. The HRTC bus and an SUV were not located under the wreckage, nor were their occupants. They have yet to be identified. Apparently, both vehicles have fallen down the valley by the force of debris,” Director of the State Disaster Management Force, Sudesh Kumar informed the media.

According to the government’s official release, ten corpses have been discovered so far, including one kid and five females. “So far around thirteen individuals have been rescued and shifted to the hospital, and another 60 are believed to be buried beneath the wreckage,” the statement added. For search and rescue operations, personnel from the Indian Army, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), police, and the local authority arrived on the scene.

Rescue and relief efforts are underway on a war footing,” said state’s Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur. “Officials have rescued a few survivors, including the HRTC bus conductor and the driver, and efforts are underway to save the remaining people buried beneath the debris. Hospital care for the injured has been arranged, and the regional administration has been directed to assist the injured in any way possible,” he added.
