Makhan Lal Bindroo, the shop owner of a well-known Srinagar pharmacy, was shot and killed by suspected militants inside his store in Iqbal Park on Tuesday, according to police.
Three individuals in Kashmir, a pharmacist, a street food seller, and a taxi driver, were shot and killed by terrorists in separate instances today, all within an hour, according to authorities.
The attackers shot Bindroo, 68, at point-blank range while he was distributing medications at his pharmacy, according to a police officer.
He was airlifted to a hospital, where he was declared dead.
Police and security personnel raced to the scene, but his attackers had already fled. The area near his pharmacy has been cordoned, and officers are conducting a search, according to the police.
Bindroo, a Kashmir Pandit, was one of the few members of his community who did not flee Kashmir after the insurgency began in 1990.
He and his wife stayed behind to continue running their pharmacy, Bindroo Medicate.
Former J&K chief minister Omar Abdullah expressed his “heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family.”
“What shocking news! He was a wonderful person. I’ve been informed that he had kept his medical store open, even at the height of extremism. I strongly condemn this assassination and extend my sincere sympathies to his family. God bless him and his soul,” writes Mr. Abdullah on social media.
According to the police officials, the terrorists also attacked Lal Bazar in downtown Srinagar shortly after the event, killing a street food seller named Virender Paswan. He was a native of Bhagalpur, Bihar, and was residing in Srinagar’s Zadibal neighbourhood. In the last four days, this is the fourth civilian killing in Srinagar.
Another civilian was shot dead by terrorists in Bandipora, the Union Territory’s third terror incident in less than an hour. Mohammad Shafi, the president of a taxi stand in the neighbourhood, has been recognized as the victim.
According to the police, all three assault sites have been sealed off, and a hunt is underway to apprehend the terrorists.
Terrorists assassinated Majid Ahmad Gojri and Mohammad Shafi Dar on Saturday, reportedly because of their ties to the security forces. The assassinations were claimed by the Resistance Front in Kashmir.
