The House of Windsor’s Queen Elizabeth II departed peacefully on Thursday at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, completing a 70-year reign as the head of state of the United Kingdom and the British Commonwealth.
Although the queen may have passed away today, Buckingham Palace was well prepared. The queen’s secretariat even has a code phrase for it: “London Bridge is Down.”
As per protocol, the prime minister will be informed over the phone that “London Bridge is down” by the queen’s private secretary. The official announcement will then be made by the prime minister.
The 30 other commonwealth members and the 15 governments for whom the queen served as head of state will subsequently be informed. The news media and UK Press Association will receive a news update.
All flags will be flown at half-staff, and bells of grief will immediately begin to ring.
After the Queen’s death
Charles, the Prince of Wales, becomes the king unofficially following the demise of the Queen. He will spend the night at Balmoral with the Queen Consort, then depart for London the following day. He will deliver his inaugural address as head of state on Friday night.
The Queen’s Funeral
There will be a march from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall four days after Elizabeth’s death. Elizabeth will be laid to rest for four days before being buried nine days later.
Two thousand invited guests, primarily heads of state, will attend in person. The funeral will be televised worldwide.
Then, it is anticipated that Elizabeth would be laid to rest alongside her late husband, Prince Philip, and her father, King George VI.
Operation London Bridge is a very thorough plan for the queen’s departure, but there is much more to it.
For instance, Elizabeth’s remains will initially rest at Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh before being transported up the Royal Mile to St. Giles’s Cathedral because she passed away at Balmoral.
It will then be carried onto the Royal for the trip back to London. Additionally, the BBC will suspend all comedy programming for 12 days after her passing.
Of course, the national anthem’s lyrics have since been modified to “God Save the King.”
