The Prime Minister pays tribute on Gandhi Shastri Jayanti

Gandhi Jayanti is recognized across India with tributes. Similar activities take place at the Raj Ghat, New Delhi.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid homage on the birth anniversaries of MK Gandhi and former Indian Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri. Modi remarked on Twitter that Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings are relevant all across the world and gives inspiration to millions of people.

“On Gandhi Jayanti, I bow to revered Bapu,”  PM Modi said on the microblogging platform. “His great ideas are internationally relevant and offer strength to millions,” he added.

Gandhi Jayanti and Tributes

Mr. Gandhi, known as an anti-colonial (non-violent) freedom fighter and a lawyer who supported India’s independence from British colonial rule. Every year on October 2, his birthday, Gandhi Jayanti, is commemorated as a national event. This year, it’s his 152nd birthday.

Gandhi Jayanti is recognized across India with tributes. Similar activities take place at the Raj Ghat, New Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind paid tribute to Mr. Gandhi. PM Modi was seen placing a wreath and offering prayers at Gandhi’s samadhi in New Delhi.

International Day of Non-violence

In the year 2007, the United Nations declared October 2 as International Day of Non-violence, with the goal of “disseminating the message of nonviolence, particularly via education and social awareness.” 

Lal Bahadur Shashtri, India’s Humble Prime Minister

PM Modi stated that Lal Bahadhur Shashtri, India’s former PM’s life, which was founded on values and ideals of Mr. Gandhi, will always be a source of inspiration for India’s population while paying respect to him on his birth anniversary. 

Lal Bahadur Shastri served as India’s second Prime Minister from 1964 to 1966, having previously held significant roles in Jawaharlal Nehru’s government. He was the leader of India during the 1965 war with Pakistan,  during the war-led crisis and famine in India he gave the slogan of “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan.”
